Will the real Sherlock Holmes please stand up?

Out of all these fine actors, who is your favorite; or, which interprets Conan Doyles version best.

My personal fav' is Ronald Howard. The charm, the stature, and the in general, the overall appearance and acting range of Howard made him a top-hit for me.

Who is the best actor? Chime in!

Hmmmmm that's a tough one. Maybe it's the first Holmes you see that sticks with you. The actors I like are the ones that give attention to detail in the part and even if they don't quite meet the attributes of Conan Doyle's character, give a performance with a bit of depth whoever they may be. It was Basil Rathbone's films that got me reading the books but the Jeremy Brett series that kept my attention too, and still does. I haven't seen much Ronald Howard yet and only a couple of Peter Cushing. I think the best is yet to come. Who comes to mind if someone says Sherlock Holmes to me ? ........ It's got to be Basil Rathbone. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

My favorite was Basil Rathbone. He was just perfect match to Holmes. He had everything Holmes had - even the nose! Perfect match! 4  out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

If you look at the descriptions of Sherlock Holmes in the Books and the prints included in the original ones, they look exactly like Basil Rathbone. Then if you see the movies and Rathbone's portrayal is perfect, well he's the best and I have seen all of them so far. I think Howard is too nice and easy going and Brett although good... was too hammy for my taste. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I agree with anonymous here. Brett wasn't the Holmes for my taste. I never really liked him. This may be an interesting fact - but I doon't have ONE DVD or VHS of Jeremy Brett's series.

I like Rathbone and Howard the best...Clive Brook wasn't to bad either....

Basil Rathbone, all the way. I discovered one of his films at my local library a year ago, decided to get it, and was immediately hooked. His portrayal is absolutely perfect in every way. As Chrisco say rightly said - down to the nose! :) I've seen all of his films at least five times over, each, and to me, he is definitely the one and only REAL Sherlock Holmes.

P.S. You HAVE to love mumbling, clumsy, hilariously adorable Nigel Bruce as well. Although he isn't exactly the way Doyle meant to portray the character, his acting is superb, and gets me laughing every time. :D

in my idea Rathbone was very good but wasn't the best fit. I would rather choose Jerermy brett for beside good acting, looking like original Sydny Bachet pics and starring in almost complete series, he portrayed a new characteristic of Holmes which hadn't showed up before him. and that was the Holmes funny quality that is his superior point toward others. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Jeremy Brett has got to be my favorite. His mannerisms are amazing and the only book that wasn't televised was a study in scarlet. He's a great actor and he's the best Holmes that's ever lived.
...well, that's what I think.

He was good in some episodes, but he was not the best. (IMO)
Basil Rathbone is by far my favourite Holmes. He was amazing.

well, perhaps so, but personally I prefer the audiobooks instead of movies and tv. In the beginning, there was only one Holmes.
So should we even be arguing over this???
