WEll, Actually he isn't. He was in the force for a good 20 years before he met Holmes, and He is a capable inspector. We must remember that in comparison to the master, everyone else pales away. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Hardly. Lestrade is a practical, (somewhat) stubborn, and layered character. Yes, he cleaves to what could be a black and white morality, but it's a crusade, an outlook that provides for something better than the rather atrocious crimes of his time period.

While not nearly as intelligent as Holmes (few-- except Mycroft-- can claim anything close), Lestrade is not neither an unintelligent nor stupid man. To even get onto the force, an average or higher intelligence is almost nessisary, certainyl to make it to the rank of Inspector, plain-clothes detective no less.

Lestrade was no more an idiot than Watson, he was simply put in a bad position doomed to failure when he tries to complete against Holmes.
