The Asylum and Revolver Entertainment present Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. Starring Gareth David Lloyd, Ben Syder and Dominic Keating. Directed by Rachel Lee Goldenberg.

Sherlock Holmes (alternatively titled Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes) is a 2010 direct-to-DVD film directed by Rachel Lee Goldenberg and produced by low-budget American independent film studio The Asylum.
It is a "mockbuster" (a low budget film intended to capitalize on the success of a cinematic film of a higher budget; in this case, the film is a mockbuster of Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes released in December 2009), which stars Torchwood star Gareth David Lloyd as Dr Watson and Ben Syder, making his film debut as Sherlock Holmes. The originality of The Asylum's usual routine places the film in the perspective of a young Holmes and Watson on their most baffling adventure when London is infested with the monsterous creations of Spring Heeled Jack (Dominic Keating), a genius supervillain. The film was shot in Wales and released straight to DVD on April 26th 2010.

Detailed Synopsis:

The film begins in 1940, during the Nazi air raids of London, in which an elderly Dr. Watson watches from a safe distance and begins to tell his nurse the one story that he and Holmes refused to publish, due to feeling that the world isn't ready for such a story.

The film shifts to 1881, early in Holmes and Waston's partnership. On the English coast where a giant octopus destroys the HMS Corrionette. Tobacco-addicted Sherlock Holmes is consulted by Inspector Lestarde to investigate the "mysterious" circumstances of the event, which Watson percieves to be a result of hysteria. With no leads to go on, the duo return to Baker Street.

That night, a young man trying to get service from a Whitechapel prostitute is viciously ravaged by a small Tyrannosaur. On reading the prositute's account in the Daily Herald, Watson denies the entire claim, while Holmes is accupied by the memory of his estraged, lesser-known brother Thorpe.

When walking in the countryside, Holmes and Watson encounter the dinosaur. After playing cat-and-mouse with the monster, they discover that is must somehow have stolen a high-pressure pump for a nearby fountain. The monster vanishes, and Lestrade is seen strangely investigating. Holmes convinces Watson to keep the monster a secret between them.

While Watson carries on with his work as a physician and attempts to record the adventure in a journal, Holmes experiments with a "clue"; a sample of the dinoaur's skin in a footprint left behind during the chase, which he discovers is synthetic. Watson treats a suspicious crippled man who requires high medication, and his attractive neice, Anesidora Ivory.

During the night, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson break into a factory containing dozens of cables of copper used for telephone wire. Holmes seems to believe that the monster has visited the factory on various occasions, simply because "copper is a great conductor of electricity". After waiting in darkness for hours, they find themself in battle with the dinosaur again, which purposely carries away rols of copper. Failing to kill the monster, Holmes' leg is injured by a failling chandelier, so the duo are forced to retun to Baker Street.

By morning, Holmes recovers thanks to Watson's medical skills. The two return to the east-end, where Holmes reveals that the dinosaur no longer defies belief, as a man is behind the crimes, noting that its skin is made of rubber from a particular factory in a diverse east-end factory. Lestrade is revealed to have been following them. Holmes finds that the factory's workforce is made of illegal immigrants, and blackmails the owner for information about the rubber bought from the factory.

Holmes deduces that the mastermind behind the crime created the octopus to steal gold from HMS Corrionette, which he used to buy the ingedients for the dinosaur, which in turn was designed to steal waterworks for what Holmes believes is "something bigger".

In the factory, the owner is savaged by the dinosaur and Lestrade goes missing before the factory explodes. Holmes almost immediately links the event to Hemsworth, deducing it from a piece of stone embedded in the remains of the factory owner. Holmes traces it to a small castle in the town where he claims to have visited with his brother as a child. Inside, the duo outwit various booby traps waiting for them, before finding the mastermind's two monsters frozen on display in his laboratory, revealing that they are robotic machines that require activation. They then find a third monster - Spring-Heeled Jack - a copper-plated cyborg with unmatchable strength that defeats the detectives effortlessly. He takes off his mask to reveal that he is not only Watson's suspicious patient, but also Thorpe Holmes, a former police partner of Lestrade's and brother of Sherlock Holmes, who repeatedly refers to Sherlock as "Robert".

He reveals that when he was Lestrade's partner, a bank robber is believed to have shot him in the spine and left him paralysed. He then deduces that Lestrade may have actually been the culprit, and therefore intends to punish him. Using advanced, almost futuristic technology, he managed to create a working body for himself using cybernetics, becoming the armour-plated supervillain Spring-Helled Jack. Thorpe blames the United Kingdom and Lestrade for his misery, and therefore unveils a revenge plot in which he will burn London to the ground and assassinate Queen Victoria, and them pinning the blame on Lestrade. An angered Holmes attempts to tackle his brother, before his "neice" Anesidora Ivory shoots him, promptly killing him.

Watson wakes later in a gyroscopic torture chamber, and learns that Ivory is also a robotic creation of Thorpe's, with a high explosive in her clockwork interior which is set to explode as she reaches Buckingham Palace. Thorpe offers to join forces with Dr. Watson, who heartily rejects the offer. Thorpe leaves the doctor to pilot his largest creation yet, a fire-breathing, flying dragon, and sets off to burn Westminster. Watson is rescued by Holmes, who survived the gunshot as it was stopped by his tobacco-box in his pocket, the irony being that Thorpse said his tobacco addiction would "do [him] in as it did [their] father".

Holmes finds another flying machine of Thorpe's, a hot-air balloon with helicopter propellors, armed with mounted machine guns, which undergoes a lengthy fight-sequence with the dragon. Watson races to Buckingham Palace where Anesidora intends to kill the queen. After killing the royal guards, Ivory is tackled and deactivated by Dr. Watson. The dragon sets fire to Whitechapel, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Cathedral before Holmes's flying machine collides with the dragon, sending them crashing to the gardens of Buckingham Palace.

Spring-Heeled Jack becomes paralysed again, crawling from the wreckage of his dragon toward Watson. He manages to hustle Watson's service revolver from his pocket and prepares to shoot him. An instant before he can fire, Sherlock Holmes shoots his brother and brigns and end to the case. They save Lestrade from the dragon's wreckage, who Holmes clears him of shooting Thorpe. Lestrade claims all credit for defeating Spring-Heeled Jack and saving the world, and the two detectives agree to never speak of the events again.

Many weeks later, in their last on-screen scene together, Watson remembers to ask Holmes about the name "Robert". Holmes replies "My given name is Robert Sherlock Holmes. But who would ever remember a detective called Robert Holmes?".

In 1940, Watson dies shortly after telling his tale. His nurse visits his gravestone some time later, doubting that the tale is true, before this belief is shaken when she spots Anesidora Ivory, having not aged a day, visiting the grave of Insp. T. Holmes.

Sherlock Holmes and Batman are both detectives. Now, although fans of the old Adam 'Shark-Repellent Bat-Spray' West series may cry fowl, Batman was previously known (and now, thanks to the works of Frank Miller, Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan) as a gritty, urban detective. it is clear that the pointy-eared vigilante was inspired a lot by our pipe-chewing pal, Holmes!

In the 11th episode of season 5, House throws out a gift that turns out to be an antique medical text written by Dr. Joseph Bell. Bell is the doctor that Arthur Conan Doyle based Sherlock Holmes. Later in the episode Wilson tries to explain away the gift by telling the team a story about a woman House loved, named Irene Adler. Irene Adler was a famous Sherlock Holmes character.

Detailed Biography

What every fan should know

Sherlock Holmes was created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887.
The very first book Conan Doyle wrote starring Sherlock Holmes was a novel, called A Study In Scarlet. Ever since, the detective mastermind has had thousands of spellbound readers from all across the globe clinging to the edges of their seats.

After realizing what a big hit A Study in Scarlet had become, Conan Doyle went on to write fifty-six short stories and three more novels, all starring Sherlock Holmes, the most infamous detective fiction has ever known.

Usually, he is accompanied by his faithful cohort, Dr. Watson.
He has been made into dozens of TV Series, and Movies over the years.

Such an innumerable amount of actors have tried at playing the part of the famous detective that it is impossible to name them all. Some of the more popular choices include: Jeremy Brett, Christopher Lee, Ronald Howard and Basil Rathbone.

Characteristics of Sherlock Holmes

Residing in London at 221B Baker Street, Holmes's character and personality set him apart from all others. He was looked at as a machine by Dr. Watson be cause of his cold, Bohemian, seemingly unfeeling nature (he does show some affection to Watson and aknowloges him as his friend) and his incredible calculating mind. He does not only have a sense of observation but that of deduction and a very systematic way of thinking. "Holmes, with his keen sense of observation, his lean face and hooked nose, his long legs, his deerstalker hat, his magnifying glass, and his ever-present pipe. This personality is what caught the reader's imagination." (The Literature of Crime and Detection) However, in the original stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, Holmes never wore the stereotypical deerstalker hat or trench coat. When he was dressed as himself (he wore numerous disguises when he investigated) he wore suits and was mentioned wearing an ear-flapped hat in "The Boscomb Valley Mystery"

Appearances

Have you ever seen someone dressed as a detective for Halloween, wearing a trench coat and a deer-stalker cap--and maybe even a pipe? Or perhaps on the front of a mystery novel? Maybe there was a magnifying glass on the front of that new Nancy Drew book you got at the library? Well, guess where all those mystery trend-marks originated from? You guessed it--Mr. Holmes himself.

It all started when Conan Doyle submitted "A Study in Scarlet" to his editor. You see, Conan Doyle had always pictured Mr. Holmes as rather ugly.

Sharp aquiline features, dark beady eyes, an astonishingly tall and skinny form, bony arms and legs, dis-colored hands due to too many chemical experiments.... but Conan Doyle's editor didn't see Mr. Holmes like that at all. When he pictured in his mind Mr. Sherlock Holmes of 221b Baker Street, he pictured a dashing detective, with a dark, handsome face, a slender form and an astonishingly keen sense of deduction. This mental picture appealed greatly to the tastes of this particular editor, and he immediately agreed to publishing the novel. In an attempt to embellish the dark, handsome mental image that he wanted to paint in people's minds, the editor added to the front cover a tall, slender sleuth dressed in the famous trench coat, deerskin cap, and magnifying glass. And that is how Mr. Sherlock Holmes first entered the realm of our spellbound imaginations.

Women

There always was a mysterious relationship between Sherlock and women. In the books, the only woman he was really impressed by was Irene Adler. Dr. Watson says that Holmes refers to her as "The Woman." She also is one of few women mentioned in the Sherlock Holmes stories.

One unusual thing is that in the short story "The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton" Holmes is engaged to be married. But just to gain some evidence.

According to what the books say, it is believed that Holmes didn't hate women, he just distrusted them. "I wouldn't tell them too much" "Women are never to be entirely trusted, -- not the best of them."
He also said "I am not a whole-souled admirer of womankind"

Other calculations say Holmes was a Homosexual, because he lived with a man he was not related to. But the books clearly state he didn't have an interest in men or women.

Drugs

Holmes took addictive drugs. Especially when he was lacking cases. Most of the time, he took Cocaine, which he injected in a 7 percent solution. He occasionally took Morphine and took opium once for his investigation in "The Man with the Twisted Lip." His most powerful addiction is that of tobacco.

Theories

The reasons for why Holmes has such a fantastic ability to deduce facts from any observation is a debated factor. Some believe it is due to a form of autism. Holmes says himself that it was most likely genetic. He was related to a French artist and said art in the blood could take odd forms and that his brother also possessed a greater power than he did.

Life after Retirement

After retiring from his detective work, he got interested in bees, and started a bee farm. He also published his own book about bees. It was called the "Practical Handbook of Bee Culture, with some Observations upon the Segregation of the Queen." He also came out of retirement to arrest a German thief who stole important plans from the British and in the investigation of "The Lion's Mane"

'Death'

In "The Final Problem" Holmes plunged to his death at Reichenbach Falls. But in "The Adventure of the Empty House" Holmes returned to Watson four years later, disguised as an old bookseller telling Watson he had never fallen into the falls in the first place. He went on to continue solving crimes through into his sixties. His is believed to have performed important secret missions for the British government in the First World War.

Sherlock is a series by BBC that features Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. Watson. The show first aired in late 2010, and the second season aired in early 2012.

About the Show:

The show was created by Steven Moffat along with Mark Gatiss. They are also both writers for the popular show Doctor Who. They are both big Sherlock Holmes fans, and think of the author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a "genius writer". They also think of the Sherlock Holmes stories that "Whenever I meet someone who hasn't read them, I always think they have got so much fun to come.". Gatiss has criticized many of the newer Sherlock Holmes adaptions as "too reverential and too slow.".

The Sherlock Holmes in this series, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, uses modern day technology such as Cell Phones and Computers. Paul McGuigan (who directed two episodes of the series), says that "in the books he would use any device possible and he was always in the lab doing experiments ... It's just a modern-day version of it. He will use the tools that are available to him today in order to find things out.". And Benedict Cumberbatch says that this Sherlock Holmes "uses technology as a resource.".

Even with this huge twist, the series still stays true to most of the original canon, including Holmes and Watson living at the 221b Baker Street address.

In August of 2010, it was announced that the series was renewed for a second season of three 90-minute episodes. The second season aired in January of 2012. It was well received by Sherlockian fans.

Season two featured three episodes all based on original Sherlockian stories (A Scandal in Bohemia, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and The Final Problem).

Season 1 Episodes:

A Study in Pink (Air Date: July 25th, 2010)

In the first episode of the series, the police and Sherlock Holmes investigate the deaths of people that have committed suicide by taking a poison pill.

The Blind Banker (Air Date: August 1st, 2010)

Sherlock Holmes is hired by one of his old friends to investigate a break-in at a bank.

The Great Game (Air Date: August 8th, 2010)

Sherlock is asked by his brother Mycroft to investigate the death of a government employee who was working on a top-secret project.

Season 2 Episodes:
Filming began on May 16th, 2011, and ended on August 24th, 2011.

A Scandal in Belgravia (Air Date: January 1st, 2012)

Sherlock Holmes is hired by his brother Mycroft to try and aquire photos taken at a small royal by Irene Adler.

The Hounds of Baskerville (Air Date: January 8th, 2012)

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are contacted by Henry Knight, who is bothered constantly by the memories of his father's death. While investigating Dewer's Hollow, and the nearby Ministry of Defence testing site 'Baskerville', Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson successfully uncovers a conspiracy...

The Reichenbach Fall (Air Date: January 15th, 2012)

After a series of important cases give Sherlock Holmes fame, Moriarty decides to launch a simultaneous heist on the Tower of London, Bank of England, and Pentonville Prison. He is then captures and put on trial. He pleads not guilty by blackmailing, and then visits Sherlock Holmes, explaining he still wants to 'burn' him, and then threatens him with a "final problem" for him to solve.

Season 3 episodes (TBA):
At the end of the last episode of season two, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss both tweeted that season three is in the works, but production will probably not start until after the end of 2012, with it airing in 2013 (at the earliest) due to Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman having other commitments.

Steven Moffat has said that he wants to cover some of the details that are hardly ever covered in adaptions in season three.

Reception and Awards:

The show has received mainly positive reviews from critics. The first episode ranked very high on the Appreciation Index, which means people were very fond of it. The Bourne Ultimatum said that the show has a hint of Doctor Who in it (Which isn't really surprising, considering who the creators and writers are of the show).

Detailed Biography

What every fan should know

Mary Morstan was the daughter of Captain Arthur Morstan, an officer in the Indian Army.

Described as small, blond and well gloved, she was sent back from India as a small child. She lived in Edinburgh until she was 17 and later became employed as a governess by Mrs Cecil Forrester.

We first meet Mary in 1888 when she asks Holmes for help. Not only had her father disappeared without trace on his return to London to meet her some ten years earlier, she had for the previous six years received an anonymous gift through the post of a large single pearl.

She decided to consult Holmes having now received a letter, again anonymous, asking that she meet the sender with instructions not to contact the police but to bring companions if she so wished.

Who better than Holmes and Watson ?

Her story appears in the novel 'The Sign of Four' and by the end of the adventure Dr Watson has decided to ask Mary Morstan to marry him.

Lineage

Mary Morstan's father was a senior captain of an Indian regiment and later stationed near the Andaman Islands. He disappeared in 1878 in what would later be proved to be related to the mystery"The Sign of Four". Her mother died after her birth. So she had no relatives in England.

Relationship with Watson

Mary Morstan and Dr. Watson seemed to have a connection every since she came in as Holmes' client. By the end of the Sign of Four, Watson had asked Mary to marry him. She accepted, and they got married in 1889. When Mary Morstan dies, (Unknown why she did) Watson moves back in with Holmes, and doesn't explain how she died.

Detailed Biography

What every fan should know

Irene Adler was a Sherlockian Character from the story "A Scandal in Bohemia" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It was published in July of 1891.

She is one of the most notable female characters in the Sherlock Holmes stories, despite the fact of appearing in only one story.

Basic Information

She was reported to have been born in New Jersey in 1858. She had a career as an opera singer, performing in La Scala, Milan, Italy,

and even more cities. She retired in her early twenties and moved to London.

Dr. Watson refers to her as "The Late Irene Adler" at the time of A Scandal in Bohemia's Publication. Her cause of death was not given in the stories. However, it is said that her early retirement was from a health problem that could have caused her death. On the other hand, most people think Dr. Watson refers to her as "The Late Irene Adler" because "Late" can also mean "Former." When she married Godfrey Norton, Adler became her "Former" name.

Appearances in Sherlockian Stories

Even though A Scandal in Bohemia is really the only story that focuses on Adler, she has been mentioned in four other stories:

A Case of Identity
The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle
The Five Orange Pips*
His Last Bow

* In the Five Orange Pips, Holmes says he has been beaten four times. Three by a man, and once by a woman. Irene Adler is the only woman to outsmart Holmes, but it is never clear if it is speaking of Adler.

Relationship with Holmes

Adler has earned Holmes' admireation. When the King of Bohemia asks "Would she not have made an admirable queen? Is it not a pity that she was not on my level? Holmes replies saying that Adler is on a much higher level then the king. (by which he means, higher)

In the beginning of A Scandal in Bohemia it describes Holmes' respect for Adler:

To Sherlock Holmes she is always the woman. I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex. It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler. All emotions, and that one particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise but admirably balanced mind. He was, I take it, the most perfect reasoning and observing machine that the world has seen, but as a lover he would have placed himself in a false position. He never spoke of the softer passions, save with a gibe and a sneer. They were admirable things for the observer--excellent for drawing the veil from men's motives and actions. But for the trained reasoner to admit such intrusions into his own delicate and finely adjusted temperament was to introduce a distracting factor which might throw a doubt upon all his mental results. Grit in a sensitive instrument, or a crack in one of his own high-power lenses, would not be more disturbing than a strong emotion in a nature such as his. And yet there was but one woman to him, and that woman was the late Irene Adler, of dubious and questionable memory.

The "Questionable Memory" is kept alive by a photograph of Adler, which had been left for the King. Holmes asked for, and recieved it as his reward for taking part in the case. It is one of his prized possessions.

What every fan should know

Dr. John Hamish Watson is the loyal and trusted friend, companion and chronicler of Sherlock Holmes, a late 19th-century fictional detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Early Years

His father was Henry Watson and it is thought that his mother passed away when he was quite young.His father, elder brother ( Henry Jr) and he are thought to have gone to Australia after his mother's death and he was therefore familiar with the goldfields there as mentioned in 'The Sign of Four'.

After leaving school he attended the University of London Medical School to undertake a medical degree. As part of his training he worked at St Batholomew's Hospital in London as a staff surgeon and had a dresser called Stamford. From 'A Study in Scarlet : " In 1878 I took my degree of Doctor of Medicine of the University of London, and proceeded to Netley to go through the course prescribed for surgeons in the Army."

Army Career

Watson was at first attached to the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers who were stationed in India . He was to be an assistant surgeon. However, before he could join his regiment the second Afghan War had started. When he arrived at Bombay (Mumbai) his regiment were already far into enemy territory where he could not follow. As a result he was attached to the Sixty-Sixth Foot (Berkshires).

He took part in the Battle of Maiwand on July 27 1880 during which he was wounded by a 'Jezail Bullet' , Jezail being a type of musket . He would have been captured by the enemy but for the courageous actions of his orderly, Murray. He recovered from his wound but contracted enteric fever and was gravely ill. He was eventually sent home by the Army Medical Board and traveled back to England on the troop ship Orontes.

Meeting Sherlock Holmes

Back in England, Watson was staying in a private hotel in the Strand, London but his army pension of eleven shillings and sixpence a day did not stretch as far as he would like and by January 1881 he decided to look for cheaper lodgings. He met Stamford once again by accident in the Criterion Bar who told him of someone looking to share the cost of a place in Baker Street, a certain Mr Sherlock Holmes as recounted in 'A Study in Scarlet'.

Holmes and Watson

Watson first started to become involved in the singular occupation of his fellow tenant in March 1881 with the investigation of the murder of Enoch Drebber which Watson was to relate in 'A Study in Scarlet'. From then on Dr. Watson continued to be associated with the Great Detective, even finding his second wife through his association with Holmes, meeting the future Mrs Watson, Mary Morstan in July 1888 during the adventure of 'The Sign of Four'.

Description and Appearance

After Watson returns from Afghanistan, he is described to be "as thin as a lath and as brown as a nut." His main description is given in "The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton": "... a middle-sized, strongly built man--square jaw, thick neck, moustache ...". In The Hound of the Baskervilles, he says that he is "reckoned fleet of foot". In the story "His Last Bow", he is described as "thickset".

With a screenplay by Michael Robert Johnson and Anthony Peckham and Simon Kinberg, screen story by Lionel Wigram and Michael Robert Johnson, the film is produced by Joel Silver, Lionel Wigram, Susan Downey, Dan Lin and Steve Clark-Hall. Michael Tadross and Bruce Berman serve as executive producers. In theaters December 25, 2009, Sherlock Holmes will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Detailed Biography

What every fan should know

Jack Stapleton is a character from the Sherlock Holmes Novel "The Hound of the Baskervilles."

Jack Stapleton is said to be a thin and bookish-looking entomologist. He likes to catch butterflies and only releases his temper at key moments.

He is a black - hearted violent villian hidden beneath a kind and loving man.

In the death of Sir Charles, Stapleton acts like he is the good man. He says he is a "Man of Science" and that he examined the footprints. He says Sir Charles died of heart failure. But he knows he killed him. After killing Sir Charles, he then plots to kill his nephew, Sir Henry Baskerville.

Jack Stapleton knows about the legend of the hound, so he wants to bring it back. By doing so, he buys a hound in London and uses phosphorous to make the hound glow like the one from the legend. He also decides to hide it in a wooden shed, no where to be found. He waits until he gets his chance to let the hound go.

He finds out that Sir Henry is going to walk on the moor of Baskerville Hall, so he follows Sir Henry, then went to the shed to let the hound go.

The hound does find Sir Henry. And attacks him. By now Stapleton thinks he has gotten away with it. But he has no clue that Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are waiting for it! Watson kills the hound by shooting it.

Holmes knew this was going to happen, which is why he told Sir Henry to go on a walk. So he could find the criminal. He does find out it is Stapleton. Stapleton later died after drowning in the mud of the Grimpen Mire, due to the fact he could not find his way through the heavy that night.
