William Hooker Gillette was born in Connecticut on July 24, 1853. And he died on April 29, 1937 in Connecticut. He was an actor, director and playwright. Films:
He was the son of a retired United States senator.The author Mark Twain was a friend of the family. He made his first stage appearance in the play 'Guilded Age' in 1875. He soon had lots of success and began starring in his own plays in 1881. Career as Holmes: William Gillette played Sherlock Holmes for more than thirty years. He was known as the Holmes of his day. He was very popular for playing Sherlock Holmes, and was the person that introduced the "curved" pipe to Sherlock Holmes. His most popular appearance of Sherlock Holmes was in the play "Sherlock Holmes" from 1900. He was also well known for his famous line "This is elementary, my dear fellow!" Which was later used by Clive Brook as "Elementary, my dear Watson!" He was also the first person to use the coat and hat with the character. Life after Holmes: Throughout his career, he stated he was retireing. But this never really happenned until his death. Gillette died on April 29, 1937, in Hartford, from a pulmonary hemorrhage. He was buried in the Hooker family cemetery next to his wife. |
