Detailed Synopsis:

Holmes and Watson are in Canada attending a cofference. When Lord Penrose receives a message saying his wife has been murdered.

On the way back to England, Holmes recieves a telegram from the Lord's wife, issued before her death saying she feared for her life. Holmes then goes to investigate her murder.

Holmes and Watson arrive at the village, and everybody that lives there is convinced this was done by the legendary monster of La Mort Rouge. This monster is even seen later by Dr. Watson.

Holmes, however, is denying this, and recognises Lady Penrose as Lillian Gentry, a former actress, who was involved in a famous murder case several years before. An actor named Alistair Ramson killed another actor in a jealous rage over her. Ramson was believed to have been killed in a prison escape two years before, but now Holmes believes that Ramson is living in the village, having created a new identity for himself.

Holmes then investigates a judge. This is another person that lives in the village, and he passed sentence on Ramson. the judge however, is murdered by Ramson later.

Holmes later tracks Ramson down and finds out that he plans to kill a third person. Before Holmes can find out who it is, Watson breaks in and Ramson escapes.

Holmes later finds out that the third person to be killed is the local Inn-Keeper. Who used to be a prison guard. But the inn-keeper went hiding. Ramson then kills Marie, the inn-keeper's daughter. For not revealing where her father was. Holmes finds the inn-keeper, and convinces him to make a trap for the murderer.

Holmes announces he is returning to London, and the inn-keeper comes out of hiding. And of course, Ramson attacks him. But it was really Holmes being attacked. Ramson finds out, and then escapes. But he then gets killed by the inn-keeper.
